Penpie DeFi protocol hack: $27 million in cryptocurrency stolen
In a recent incident, hackers stole $27 million worth of cryptocurrency from the decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol Penpie and received praise from other criminals. This incident has triggered in-depth thinking about cybersecurity and the crypto market.
On September 3, Penpie immediately suspended deposit and withdrawal operations after the attack. Less than 24 hours after the attack, the hacker sent $7 million in assets to the crypto mixer Tornado Cash for anonymization. This operation not only makes it more difficult to trace the source of funds, but also poses new challenges to cybersecurity.
It is worth noting that the hackers who carried out a $195 million flash loan attack on Euler Finance in March 2023 expressed their admiration for the Penpie hacker. They left a message on the chain praising their decision to "keep all the money" and considered it a successful attack. In sharp contrast, although the Euler Finance hacker returned the stolen funds under pressure, he still failed to escape legal and moral sanctions.
In addition, phishing incidents surged 215% in August, with more than 9,000 victims losing approximately $63 million to fraud, once again reminding us of the importance of staying vigilant and protecting our assets.
To address these issues, it is particularly important to strengthen monitoring, improve security awareness, and build a more robust compliance system. We call on community members to actively participate in discussions and jointly improve the security and transparency of the network environment.
